Boots for goose hunting

Good hunting boots is of prime importance if you are to enjoy your day in the field. Nothing is more annoying than being wet and cold and not being able to overcome that cold.

The parts of your body that are most exposed to moisture and cold are your feet. Unlike other parts of the body, it is difficult to combat the dampness and cold once you are in the field.

It is easy to carry an extra pair of gloves, or take them of and put your hands in your pockets to combat dampness or cold. If it is cold you can always put on the extra sweater that you carried in your backpack or pull over your head, the built-in hat from your hunting vest.

Boots, you won't carry two pairs because they are too bulky and even if you would, the dry pair would probably get wet before you have time to change your socks and put the boots on.

A good pair of waterproof, insulated hunting boots is a must.

Two main choices are yours to consider.

Above freezing

When hunting in damp above freezing temperature in fields or on sandbanks, the best bet is pair of rubber boots ,choose between 16 inch high or waders or get booth. Make sure that they are insulated, preferably with " Thinsulate© Insulation". (more on that later).

Below freezing

When hunting in below freezing temperature in fields, the best choice is a pair of 8 to 10 inch high camo hunting boots. They are usually lighter, more comfortable to be in and also more comfortable for walking. Get a pair that is waterproof preferably of "GORE-TEX® construction that brings maximum breathability and waterproofness. Also select " Thinsulate© Insulation". This type of boots will keep your feet dry and warm.

CAMBRELLE® will also help control moisture and odors

There are many, many different brands of breathable, waterproof fabric and coatings on the Market. These include Isotex©, Indra©, Gore-Tex©, Sympatex©, and Scantex©

Vapor Attenuating & Expelling Thermal Retaining Insulation for extreme cold weather (VÆTREX™).

And more, but Gore Tex©, for waterproofness and Thinsulate© for thermal insulation are the most popular. A GoreTex©, label on your boots insures that your feet will keep dry. See their guarantee here. Choosing Thinsulate© weight for the temperature you will be in is a big question. As a rule of thumb here is what you can expect for cold insulation with different Thinsulate© weights:

200g -25° f (-32° c), 400g -40° f (-40° c), 600g -60° f (-51° c),

If you hunt in below freezing weather and do not move much, your best insurance against freezing toes is 1000g or more of Thinsulate© Insulation.

Check here for a wide selection of hunting boots. Brand names like Wolverine©, Irish Setter©, Browning©, Rocky©, Georgia©, Readhead© and others use the Gore-tex© and Thinsulate© materials in their construction.

Also get a good pair of insulated socks made of synthetic fabric like polyester.
