Snow-Goose Hunting
Snow-goose hunting in North America can be practised along four main flyways, which are called Atlantic, Mississippi, Central and Pacific flyways.
Snow-geese migrate north to south in the fall and south to north in spring trough these main flyways.
The
GREATER SNOW GEESE
hunting takes place in the Atlantic flyway. This specie is unique in the world and found almost exclusively in the Atlantic flyway. The ROSS GEESE and LESSER SNOW GEESE populate the other flyways.

Snow-goose hunting preparation
is almost the same as for
Canada goose
you will need the same
camouflage clothes
, good warm and waterproof boots
, same type of
blinds,
shotguns, shot shells
, the decoys and their number can be very different. The snow goose call is also different.
Depending on the season, the number of goslings may vary quite a lot. Some years, if northern weather conditions are favourable, food is plenty and predators can feed on other food, then, the percentage of young geese can make as much as 20 percent of the total population.
When this situation appends, goose hunting is much easier. Young snow geese are lured much easier to the call and decoys than mature snow geese. You will then need fewer decoys, sometimes a dozen or even half a dozen decoys will do the job, and the decoys can sometimes be only silhouettes.
But, in the years that reproduction is not as good, sometimes it is as low as 2 percent of the population, then the techniques have to be refined. Snow goose decoys have to be in greater number, up to a few hundreds, sometime even thousand. They have to look as real as possible. Calling will also be much more demanding.
Snow geese tend to gather in large flocks during migration,

snow geese family usually number up to five young geese and they stay together with the adult parents in the flock.
