Snow goose spring 2007
greatersnow geese around Montmagnyand near Cap-Tourmente, Québec. When the geese migrates in spring, sometimes in April, they first come toBaie-du-Fêvre, between Québec and Montréal.
The geese don't stay there for very long generally.
They continue north east to the Montmagnyand Cap-Tourmentearea and go down the river as far as Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pocatiére.
Isle-aux-Gruesis not open to spring goose hunting neither is Cap-Tourmentebut some outfitters practice spring snow goose hunting near the preserve.
During the first few days, the geese go all aroundlooking for green fields and something to eat, they are not very easy to hunt then. They wander all around and havenot yet settled for a few particular fields that they like.
But, from the beginning of May, the fields aregetting greener and greener and the geese liketo return to the same fields every day. That is when it is easier to spotthe best fields.
The best conditions are a windy day and high tide on the Saint-LawrenceRiver. When the day is windy, the geese won't stay on the waterbecause they don't feel comfortable, they can't go on the sandbankeither when the tide is high. The only place left is then inthe fields to get food.
When windy, geese usually fly lower and slower up wind. That is when you have the best chance to harvest a few.
Some fields are more favourable with an north easterlywind and others are better with a westerly wind. This all depends on their location. Check with a good spring greater snow goose hunting guide or outfitter.
